I’m continually amazed at Oren’s ability to ignore the danger Don represents. Demagogues like Don are inevitable, history is replete with them. It’s the capitulation of elites on the right that continues to shock me. Good luck America.

Yes, but no blocs. Everything is bilateral and transactional. A League of Democracies or whatever is delusional since there are none.

Canada is more or less a fake country whose only identity is that they aren't the US. That is no bar to friendly cooperation but don't expect anything more.

What arrogance! Not only is Canada a real country, but the long-time peaceful and cooperative relations have been to the benefit of the US as well. Yes, there is a certain smugness on the part of many Canadians, mainly on the left, in regard to our distinction as a separate country, but that shouldn't be overstated in our relations.

OK. Go for it. If you think being a dependency of the US is bad, try the EU.

Trump's tariff fetish (the most apt term I've heard for his obsession) is fundamentally destructive. If you happen to believe that current trading relationships should be destroyed, then that's the perfect way. But how can any clear-eyed person think that destroying a long-established and mutually beneficial trading relationship, especially one enshrined in a free trade treaty, is good policy? The North American auto industry flourishes on that foundation. How can anyone justify abrogating the treaty and imposing punitively high tariffs on the healthy functioning of that industry? Who benefits from such destruction?

I was in the audience at the Toronto lunch and became a paid subscriber after. What was chilling about that luncheon is that the majority of the people in the room were so angry with the US, and so emotional about our sovereignty, that they refused to accept Oren’s rational hypothesis. I didn’t “like” Oren’s view either, but it is most likely true, and to the detriment of Canadians not to acknowledge this.

Is this really the life of a Policy Analyst? My hope is that one morning, Oren wakes up and says to himself: I want to make things happen rather than watch things happen.

Take a leadership role in Government and/or run for office. Life is short, sir.

The USA has in reality always been alone and on our own. Other countries of the world, including Canada and Mexico and the rest just use us for our money and wealth. As the song says, "when the moneys gone, they won't be around anymore".

We've been goin it alone since we broke from England which is the best way to go. We move forward, you're with us or I guess then, against us. Whatever...

Canadian here. Your comments capture the current zeitgeist up here w.r.t. Trump pretty well.

Both Canada and the US need to get back to Smith and Burke. Your comments in Canada will hopefully resonate.
