When we miss out on medical breakthroughs we’ll all feel the pain of these choices. This is all become much like Mao’s cultural revolution, which included much rage but no benefit. Populism is too easily steered towards thoughtlessness as it’s driven forward by emotion over thinking.

Populism works in any political system. It’s about power and permission structures. It allowed Mao to get rid of other party leaders and the bureaucracy and to dumb down the country so he could rule unchecked.
Definately. I am very concerned and I feel that we are living through a moment of great instability, but I'm not worried that a bunch of MAHA goons are going to break down my door, beat me, and kill my whole family if I refuse to confess. And frankly I feel more safe asking my questions and expressing my opinions than I did three years ago. It's also comforting to know that Trumps victory rested on the votes of a huge number of traditional liberals who desire nothing more than for the Democrats to recover their senses. I am very sure that if Trump screws everything up--which seems very likely--that his movement can kiss that support goodbye.
You may feel more free to express your thoughts but the targets of the repression do not. The threat is not people breaking down your door unless you’re an immigrant for foreigner of some kind, but of losing your job, getting sued, losing government money, etc. the pain is from the process, which jn our atomized society is a quite effective form of inflicting pain. People who don’t have the strongest social networks are more fragile.
But three years ago a lot of poeple including traditonal liberals were subjected to all of the above and more. If we are standing on metaphore to see Maoism into the present I fail to see why this would not apply.
No they weren’t Nathan. Nothing like what is happening now happened three years ago. Please point me to law firms that signed agreements with the Biden administration on whether they could continue their business or not. Please point me to foreign conservative scholars who had their visas canceled and were locked away in ICE detention. Please show me stories about companies afraid to speak out about the Biden administration out of fear of retaliation. Please show me the secret prison the Biden admin set up in a foreign country for conservative Cuban emigres.

Do you think Mao is properly classified as a populist politician?
He was playing one with the Cultural Revolution
I don't know....seems like the concept of populism only makes sense in the context of democratic systems.

I don't know man...seems like the term "populist" loses any useful meaning if we associate it with the most extreme totalists in modern history.
Well Trump is being quite “totalist” right now. Do you think of him as a populist?
