I recall a campaign a few years ago to raise the pay of immigrant field laborers in California to match the minimum wage (adding about $4 an hour). It was argued that this would add only 10 cents to the average cost of a week's worth of groceries.
So, I thought, why not raise the wage 10 times as much, bringing it to about $43 an hour, thus adding only 1 dollar to the cost of groceries? This way Americans (including me) would work the fields and no immigrants would be needed.
