Geez Oren, get a grip. I understand you want to argue with fellow elites about arcane economic concepts, but we’re in the middle of an authoritarian movement. How about some history about the economic performance of autocrats from the past? Or perhaps something modern day, say, Hungary? Is there an economy run by an authoritarian regime you’d like to hold up for us to emulate? I suspect not. Please, we all must speak up, and tell the truth. Oren, elites like you, who have a large platform, have a special responsibility to educate fellow citizens about what’s really at stake. Don cares not a whit about economic policy, tariffs included. For him, they’re a simple authoritarian tool to bring business to heel. Anyone notice how well it’s working? Please keep your eye on the ball.

Is the authoritarian movement the one that’s been cajoling private companies to censor on their behalf; organizing multi-front lawfare against its political opponents; maintaining a running database of all emails, texts, and push notifications; claiming the right to suspend habeas corpus for arbitrarily classified “terrorists” (an appellation once affixed to Nelson Mandela); demanding regulatory control of everything everywhere via nonsense about carbon levels; and sanctioning one third of the world?

This take is profoundly unserious in light of everything we now know…

It's the one that installs incompetent loyalists in the power ministries, shakes down law firms, threatens judges, attacks the media, seeks to obliterate history in public institutions, attacks universities, sides with murderous dictators (on stage) over our own security agencies, seeks to break the civil service, pardons convicted insurrectionists, and incites armed insurrections live on tv. Yes violence, always violence. Don loves violence. Oh, and conspiracy theories, be on the lookout:). Go Q! Too bad it's not just rank incompetence, though there is daily evidence of that. Read our foremost non-partisan authorities on global authoritarian movements, we have many. Travel the world and learn the history of other nations. Don is not the first to implement this time tested playbook, but he IS an uncommonly good demagogue and charlatan. I'll admit I worry when he publicly brags about "acing" a test meant to detect dementia:) Who can forget him proudly reciting, live on tv: person, woman, man, camera, tv! And the bleach, the bleach...

China is an authoritarian country with a very successful economy. In fact. Why has no Chinese economist involved in raising the living standards of a billion people 20 fold in 50 years not one a Nobel prize.
